I’m Martin Sulev, author of the Demon of Athens series of historical novels. My writing combines my love of history with extensive research. I like to write fast-paced stories with plenty of action, but with a few more serious questions hiding just under the surface.
Why did I decide to become a writer? When I was young, I loved to read fantasy novels and science-fiction. As I grew older, I gravitated towards historical fiction, though I still read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. At the same time, I have had an interest in the ancient world that has followed me for my whole life. About ten years ago, I came back to the world of Ancient Greece with new eyes and I was astounded by what I found. To say I fell in love with the ancient Greeks is an understatement (I even studied Classical Greek as a hobby, a pleasure that I still hack away at today!) There were so many stories waiting to be told, and not just famous episodes like the last stand of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. A story started welling up inside me and one day I sat down at my computer and started typing. The Demon of Athens was born.
In addition to my fiction projects, I have extensive experience as a freelance writer in the ESL industry. I have also contributed translations of modern Chinese short stories to the anthologies Dragonflies and Endless War, both published by Cornell University. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in the completely unrelated field of palaeontology.
I have lived in China and Korea, and currently live with my wife and son in Toronto, Canada. Besides writing, I love studying Greek (both classical and modern) when I have the time.
I am currently working on Shadow of Thebes, the third novel in the Demon of Athens series.
Please contact me if you have any questions or would just like to say hello. I’d love to hear from you!
Cheers,
Martin Sulev
